Esquizos 2021-2023
106 drawings, ink on paper, 44x30.5 cm. and 35.6x27.9 cm.

This project takes its name from the black and white drawings made by Dr. Francisco Hernández to accompany his descriptions of the plants used in Aztec herbal medicine. His botanical iconography, composed of almost 2,000 drawings, was sent to Spain in 1576 and later lost in the great fire of the library where they were kept in 1651. This series was worked under the idea of reconstructing the lost documents by updating some qualities of the plants. Each image shows the morphology as well as the description of medicinal, ritual, symbolic, economic and
historical characteristics to make a brief mention of the relationship between the natural world and the cultural construction.
